IMPORTANT GUIDELINES FOR DEVOTEES PERFORMING ARATI FOR THEIR LORDSHIPS

@ Sri Sri Radha Vrindavancandra Mandir, ISKCON Pune

  • General Instructions for all artis:
    1. All the items required for the Arati must be checked while bringing the plates from the back up kitchen.
    2. Guru Maharaj picture should be be kept at the table OR at altar with care that it may not fall off. GBC Rule ideally forbids one to keep Guru’s picture at the altar.
    3. Offer a flower to Guru Maharaj and chant the prayers seeking his blessings and mercy for performing the services.
    4. Both Sri Sri Gaur Nitai Altar and SS JBS Altar curtains should be opened towards SS RVC altar as there is less space in the sides. It is also preferable to open SS RVC Altar curtain towards SS JBS side.
    5. Lit the single wick kept on the stand before opening the curtains/door. If time permits, incense sticks can be lit also.
    6. Now put on the curtains and open the wooden doors very carefully so as not to stretch the curtains, etc. The technique is to bend the doors before pushing them in sides.
    7. When there is a program going on in TEMPEL HALL, then COUNCHSHELLS MUST BE BLOWN 3 TIMES SIMPLY with the HAND to avoid distraction for the audience.
    8. At other times, All three pujaris should blow the counchshells together and one should wait till the other pujaris have completed blowing and again they should start together after a moment’s pause.
    9. The counshell should always be kept in a horizontal position (NOT VERTICAL) on the top of pot with the blowing hole towards the side of table. It should be placed by the left side of altar just behind the table.
    10. After blowing the counchshell in the beginning of Arti, it should be kept by the side of altar door and after blowing at the completion of Arati, it should be brought back in that altar and kept by the left side of the table.
    11. Since, the pujari worshipping Their Lordships Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladev and Shubdra is leading the Arti ceremony, if possible he can ring the bell slightly louder when he is offering the items to Srila Prabhupada so that the other two pujaris can also synchronize their movements to finish the offering of items at the same time. Also, SS JBS pujari should offer each item to SP only 3 times.
    12. After offering items to Guru, all items must be offered to SRILA PRABHUPADA on VYAS ASAN at the end of temple hall 3 TIMES and then to vaishnavas in the temple hall 3 TIMES.
    13. All three pujaris should give the ARATI LAMPS from SS RVC ALTAR ONLY. Also, they should keep offered ARGYAM WATER outside SSRVC ALTAR.
    14. After completion of Arati, blue cloth should be used to carefully mop the altar. Also, remove any pins, glue tack lying on the altar.
    15. All three pujaris should broom and mop their respective altars. Pujaris worshipping Their Lordships Sri Sri Gaur Nitai should start brooming from Lord Nityanand side and pujari worshipping Their Lordships JBS should start brooming from Lord Jagannath side.
    16. After brooming and mopping, all the tables should be arranged in a way that the small black arrow is directly pointing to temple hall.
    17. The half circular platform outside the altar doors must also be mopped by the respective pujaris after every Arti except Mangal Arti.
    18. The kusa grass asana should be kept by the side of the table with hand. WE SHOULD NOT PUSH THE ASANA WITH OUR FEET at any point of time.
    19. At the completion of Arati, the bell should be kept at the end of table towards the Altar with Hanumanji facing the visitors and the Achaman pot should be kept to the left of bell on all the three tables.

  • Specific Instructions for Mangal Arti:
    1. Pujaris should report by 4:20 AM and be ready by 4:25 AM after performing Achamana, washing their feet and paying obeisances.
    2. At 4:25 AM, they should enter the altar along with the waking up seva devotees and should open the doors of their respective altar after putting up the curtains.
    3. Take the counchshells, the water pots inside the altar and put the visarjan pots(to wash the counchshells before and after blowing them) at their respective positions outside the altar door.
    4. After Lord Nrsimha Arti, Tulasi Maharani worshipping plates should be given from Sri Sri Gaur Nitai and Sri Sri Jagannath, Baladeva, Subhadra altar.
    5. After closing the altar, SSRVC pujari should bring a tray and collect all the drinking water glasses, flowers and Tulasi leaves from all the altars. He should also shift Tulasi Maharani out of the altar in the backup area and shift parampara behind SS RVC altar. All other photo frames should also be shifted to the side of the respective altars and SP deity should be shifted to the table in front of SS GN.
    6. SS GN pujari should start brooming the place in front of altar from Sri Nityanand pr side and SS JBS side pujari should start mopping. All tables should be gently shifted forward for brooming and moping and should be put back in position after the service is done.
    7. SS RVC pujari should put small tables in front of SS GN and SS RVC altar and shift the small deities there with GREAT CARE and ATTENTION.
    8. Later all 3 pujaris should assist in changing the back drops: one to climb up the stair case, one to give the new back drop and one to fold the previous day backdrop cloth.
